Small Shady Urban Garden – Wiltshire

Transformation of a small urban shady garden into a lush, inspirational space with a tropical feel

This small urban garden featured a mature Birch tree which, although beautiful, created large areas of shade. Furthermore the existing beds lacked character and variation. The Grade II listed property had been renovated to a very high standard and the garden required much thought in order to complement and enhance this work.

We designed a flowing, natural space with large curving planting beds and a cobbled pathway around the central tree intended to ‘pull’ one from the main patio and into the garden to explore. Lush, tropical-style plants were selected which were shade-tolerant with a mix of evergreen shrubs, grasses and perennials designed to provide year-round interest. A gorgeous pair of tree ferns (Dicksonia antartica) were sourced to complete the feel.

A stunning lighting scheme was implemented to enhance the space and highlight the gorgeous foliage, and a corten steel water feature nestles within the planting with a delicate fountain trickle.
