In the historic centre of Bath, metres from Jane Austen’s home, we helped re-design, build and plant a formal courtyard garden. Using clipped Yew and Box parterre sections, we maintained a stunning view of the Grade-II listed Victorian Orangery, whilst creating a range of focal points from other aspects in the site. When it came to our planting design, Lavender ‘Hidcote’ was planted to spill onto the hard landscaping with Box balls and Hebe used to ‘hold’ the planting space. Roses punctuate the lower planting to provide height and interest and a beautiful dwarf Acer tree emerges from textured Aucuba japonica to draw the eye. Materials were chosen carefully to complement and enhance the historic setting. It is a stunning garden in which to sit, think and absorb the sense of history.
